Exhibition: Disparate Dialogue
After moving from Queensland to north- west Tasmania, Susan Simonini has fallen in love with her new surroundings, from the rugged coastline and rolling hills, to the alpine landscape of Cradle Mountain. With a background in painting and printmaking Simonini has more recently be working in Ceramics, hand building organic forms from earthy clays.
“Each individual form and each type of clay lends itself to different surface treatments” she says. “Some pieces are simply glazed and others become highly decorated with my art,” with abstracted images of sweeping landscapes and horizon lines drawn and painted onto the surface of both functional and sculptural objects.
Simonini holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University and a Graduate Diploma in Education. Her paintings and screenprints are held in public and private collections including the Gold Coast City Art Gallery and the Mater Private Hospital Collection, Brisbane. She has been selected for national art competitions, such as the Churchie Emerging Art Award, the National Print Awards and the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award, and is the recipient of the Gold Coast Art and Design Award, the Border Art Prize and the Queensland Villages Art Prize.
