Penny Mason is a Tasmanian artists whose watercolour works on paper embody a preoccupation with both the fragility and endurance of ecosystems and the cultures they sustain. Inspired by ideas of landscape in the context of Tasmania, the works are fragmented, sometimes tranquil, sometimes dynamic, suggesting landscape features, cosmic events, microscopic worlds and memories all at once. Using several randomising techniques that exploit temperature, gravity, vibration and (occasionally) frost etching, Penny creates fields and surfaces that evoke landscape features and details within. Ideas about how to incorporate immediate physical and emotional experiences of being in a place or landscape alongside diverse points of view, memories and narratives form the basis of her explorations.
