The Wilderness Gallery
Australian wilderness photography was born in the mountains of Tasmania, flourishing through the work of 20th century photographic artists such as Olegas Truchanas and Peter Dombrovskis.
So it's fitting that The Wilderness Gallery, an integral part of Cradle Mountain Hotel, exhibits Australia’s finest collection of outstanding wilderness and nature photography.
The ten rooms of The Wilderness Gallery showcase the work of Tasmanian, interstate and international nature photographers through a series of changing displays, highlighting dramatic images from Antarctica to the Arctic, from the Australian Outback to Asian rainforests, from Tasmania’s own World Heritage Wilderness to the blue depths of the Pacific Ocean.
The ten galleries surround an alpine garden, landscaped with glacier-polished boulders and planted with Tasmanian native flora from the Cradle Mountain region.
Film and audio-visual presentations are shown in the two theatrettes – one of these presents a tribute to the late Peter Dombrovskis, whose life and work still inspires wilderness photographers today.
All images on display, including original limited-edition archival prints, are available for purchase from The Wilderness Gallery Shop and Online Gift Shop. The shop also has a range of Tasmanian-inspired gifts, craftwork, jewellery, outdoor clothing, books and magazines. A Tasmanian honey-tasting experience and sales of local honey are special features of The Wilderness Gallery Shop.
With its versatile spaces, stylish ambience and convenient location at Cradle Mountain Hotel, The Wilderness Gallery is also an excellent venue for meetings and conferences.
Entry to The Wilderness Gallery is free – be sure to include a visit whenever you come to Cradle Mountain.
